Mexican security forces confirmed today the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", founder and leader of the country's most powerful and feared cartel, the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).

The news was made public this Sunday, February 22, 2026, after a military operation in the state of Jalisco, where federal forces, mainly the army, carried out an action that led to his death. According to official sources from the Mexican government and the Ministry of Defense, El Mencho was seriously injured during the fight in the municipality of Tapalpa, a historical stronghold of the CJNG, and died during airlift to Mexico City for medical treatment. The operation took place early in the morning and was considered a major blow against drug trafficking.

El Mencho, born in 1966 (age 59), was on the US Department of Justice and DEA's most wanted list, with a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest or elimination. The DEA described him as the new "public enemy number one," a billionaire hitman who controlled a large portion of the trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the US, up to 80% of the supply in cities like Chicago and a third of the total narcotics imported into the country.

The CJNG, which broke away from El Chapo's Sinaloa cartel, has been accused of brutal military tactics, high-caliber weapons, violent propaganda and expansion across six continents. The group controls massive traffic routes and is known for its extremism. Following his death, violent reactions were recorded from cartel members: roadblocks, burning of vehicles and businesses in at least six states, Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato and Aguascalientes.

Federal and state authorities have mobilized large forces to control the situation, while the US Embassy issued warnings for American citizens to stay in the country and avoid endangered areas.

This is one of the biggest strikes against drug trafficking in decades, which could change the map of cartels in Mexico and ease pressure from the Trump administration on the Mexican government to fight fentanyl.
