Russia is producing thousands of Iranian drones at a large secret military base, leaked documents show. Engineers at the Alabuga facility in Tatarstan, about 800 kilometers east of Moscow, aim to produce about 6,000 drones by 2025, the Washington Post reported.
Although production has been delayed, experts believe this could mean hundreds of Shahed drones will be directed at Ukrainian targets at a time, rather than the dozens currently used in attacks. The documents show that the workers, some of whom have had their passports confiscated to prevent them from leaving the country, use code names to refer to the project.
Drones are "boats", explosive charges are "bumpers", while Iran alternates between "Ireland" and "Belarus". The program was a well-kept state secret, despite the fact that it took place in a facility the size of 14 football fields, which would need to be expanded further. The three-phase program began in 2023.
Dismantled drones from Iran are being upgraded in Alabuga. They are currently in the second phase, manufacturing the boxes themselves, but equipping them with Iranian electronics.
Early next year, the facility will begin production of unmanned aerial vehicles using Russian materials and components.
