VOA: Berluscon's death could destabilize Italy

Former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, a billionaire who founded Italy's biggest media company before transforming the political landscape, died on Monday at the age of 86.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini called him "a man and a great Italian" in a statement.

Defense Minister Guido Crosetto wrote that Berlusconi's death is the end of an era.

"I loved him so much. Goodbye Silvio ," he wrote.

Mr Berlusconi, who served as prime minister from 1994-1995, 2001-2006 and 2008-2011, was suffering from leukemia and had recently suffered a lung infection.

Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing coalition, and while he himself did not have a role in government, his death is likely to destabilize Italian politics in the coming months.

His friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin put him at odds with Prime Minister Meloni, a staunch supporter of Ukraine.

His business empire also faces an uncertain future. He never publicly indicated who would take full responsibility for the business after his death, although his eldest daughter Marina is expected to play an important role./VOA
