One person died and 11 others were injured after a fire broke out at a home for the elderly and people suffering from mental health conditions in the northern city of Parma on Monday morning.
It is learned that the victim is a 62-year-old woman guest at "Casa di Arianna", run by the Avitas cooperative.
Ten guests and a health worker also needed hospital treatment after suffering smoke inhalation, ANSA reports.
However, no one was reported to be in serious condition. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, which reportedly broke out around 5:30 a.m. local time.
"I want to send a message of condolence to the victim's family and my thoughts are with those who are currently in the hospital due to smoke inhalation," said Parma Mayor Michele Guerra.
He said they are working to continue providing support to those in need.
"The building in question is privately owned and managed. We are working to continue providing support to those in need while we wait for investigators to determine the nature of the fire and its causes," he added.
