Deal over everything*!

When 'peace' is bought with territories, history repeats itself as a farce...

Donald Trump, with all the confidence of a negotiator with the "Art of the Deal," just came up with a peace plan for Ukraine that would make any Russian ambassador proud.

It seems that Donald Trump has discovered the magic formula for peace: Ukraine just needs to hand over Crimea, give up NATO, and there we have “victory”! All, of course, with Vladimir Putin’s blessing and with Zelenskyy having to thank the US for offering him an end to the war with “less” territory and “more” compromise. That’s it. Peace on paper, war on conscience, and Ukraine’s sovereignty in the free market of American diplomacy.

According to Trump, Zelenskyy “could stop the war almost immediately,” if only he could admit that Russia has won by force what it did not win by diplomacy. And he must sell this as a historic achievement. From Alaska and in Washington, Trump is behaving more like an advocate for Russian interests than a US president. “I don’t want any more war,” he says, but he forgets that without justice, peace is capitulation.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, dressed in the colors of the resistance, does not go to the White House for bargains, but for guarantees. At a time when Kharkiv is burning from Russian missiles and children are being killed in their beds, Trump sells “peace” as a television product, while Europe struggles to bear the moral burden of a war that is once again approaching its borders.

Ironically, the only thing holding Europe together these days is... silence. There is no firm, unyielding stance on this "proposal." As if this isn't the most dangerous precedent since 1938, when Chamberlain gave Hitler Czechoslovakia to avoid a war that broke out anyway.

This is not just a test for Ukraine. It is a test for all of us: who are you at the moment when others decide for you by turning their backs on Justice? A silent witness? Or a critical voice that says: territory is not sold for a temporary peace?

This is not diplomacy, it is the bargaining of a street vendor offering “peace” at the price of sovereignty. If this is America “defending democracy,” then perhaps Russia wrote the script from the beginning./ Pamphlet

 * "Deal" - Trump's obsession with agreements, even when they conflict with morality or international law.

*   "über alles" is a historically loaded German phrase (from the phrase "Deutschland über alles"), evoking a kind of arrogance of supremacy to offer the "agreement" as an absolute fetish, above everything: over the law, victims, territory, sovereignty.
