The fall of the euro "crushes" exports, the strongest contraction
The decline in exports continued in August, deepening compared to the previous month, as a reflection of the consequences that the fall of the euro is having on exporters, but also the unfavorable price situation in the international stock markets.

INSTAT announced that in August 2023 exports of goods reached the value of 27 billion ALL, decreasing by -21.9%, compared to the same period of the previous year. This is the deepest monthly decline this year and the strongest since 2020, when exporters suffered most of all the consequences of the pandemic.

In January, sales abroad expanded by 20.2% on an annual basis, while in February they expanded by only 2.8%. The decline started in March, with 11.7%, deepened in April with 19.3% and followed the negative trend in May with -11.7%. In June the contraction deepened again to 17.3%, to slow down in July to -4%, jumping in August with -21.9%.

As never before, all groups are decreasing in value, with the exception of "Chemical and plastic products", which still has a very small weight in total exports, with only 3.4%.

The two groups that recorded the biggest contraction in August are "construction material and metals", with 50.9% and textiles and shoes with 18.6%. Foreign sales for "food, beverages and tobacco" and "machinery and spare parts" were also on the decline, which were the two sectors with the best performance of exports in recent years.

According to INSTAT, During the month of August 2023, the reduction of exports by -21.9% was influenced by the groups: "Construction materials and metals" with -14.3 percentage points, "Textiles and shoes" with -3.8 percentage points, "Wood and paper products" with - 1.3 percentage points. While the group: "Chemical and plastic products" had a positive impact with +1.1 percentage points.

The deepening of the fall in August has worsened the performance for the whole 8 months. According to INSTAT, in this eight-month period, exports of goods reached the value of 300 billion ALL, decreasing by -8.6% compared to a year ago.

According to INSTAT, the groups that have negatively affected the annual decrease in exports are: "Construction materials and metals" with -7.8 percentage points, "Minerals, fuels, electricity" with -1.0 percentage points, "Textiles and shoes" with -0.7 percentage points.

While the groups: "Food, drinks, tobacco" with +1.7 percentage points and "Machinery, equipment and spare parts" with +0.4 percentage points have had a positive impact.

Fashion, the sector that is suffering the most from the fall of the euro

After an improvement in May, exports of "Textiles and footwear" returned to the annual decline of 8.5% in June. The same trend continued in July with -6%. In August, the annual contraction was the deepest this year, with 18.6%.

According to exporters, the main reason is related to the significant fall of the euro, which reduces exporters' income when converted into lek. Other factors that have influenced are the increase in the minimum wage that has increased labor costs, the contraction of demand from abroad, especially for shoes (due to the change in weather, retailers have created large stocks), the economic crisis in Europe that has reduced demand as well as the relocation of manufacturers to India and other Asian countries due to lower costs.

For the 8th month, the decline in exports deepened to 2.7%, from 1.27% which was the reduction for the 6th month. "Textiles and shoes" remain the largest group in the country, with 28% of the total.

Exporters have constantly complained to the Bank of Albania and the Ministry of Finance about the consequences of the strong devaluation of the euro, which is currently exchanged at around 107 ALL, from 118 ALL, which was the average of 2022, on their activity.

Minerals and fuels return to decline in August

"Minerals and fuels" fell 3.3% in August on an annual basis, after rising sharply by 39% in July. The performance of this group's exports depends on energy as well as the number of ships that Bankers Petroleum, the largest oil producer in the country, manages to send in a month.

For the 8th month, the group recorded a contraction of 4.5%.

This group continues to remain the second largest in the country with 23% of the total for the 7th month.

Megjithatë në gusht, ky grup shënoi një rënie relativisht të fortë me 9.7% me bazë vjetore, si rrjedhojë e motit të pafavorshëm që ndikoi në reduktimin e prodhimit.
