In the second year of operation, the number of transactions carried out through the AIPS system for payments in euros within the country has exceeded the figure of 249 NIS, while the most obvious increase is also the monetary values transmitted through this system.
The Bank of Albania reports that for the 12 months of 2023, 249,018 payments were made through this system. The total number of transactions shows a significant increase compared to last year, with an increase of 59.5%, when the total number of transactions stood at 156,044.
The volume of money transmitted through the AIPS system will also increase in 2023. For the period January-November 2023, the total value of transactions has reached 4.1 billion euros, while the year 2022 has closed with a total of 3.3 billion euros. The increase in the volume of transactions year on year is 24%.
While the volume of transactions through this system is reported to be high even for the month of January 2024. According to data from the Bank of Albania, 21,609 transactions were carried out through AIPS in the first month of this year, for a total of 349 million euros.
The AIPS system was put into operation on January 24, 2020, and made it possible for the first time to make payments in euros within the Albanian banking system without additional fees from the parent banks. Previously, national transfers in Euros were made only through the use of accounts that Albanian banks have in correspondent banks abroad.
The transfers were directed to the parent banks, which also carried out actions with very high costs, which went up to 200-300 euros for each transaction, while the time delay was a problem in itself.
Last year alone, about 10 million euros were saved in the form of transfers between correspondent banks, while the figure of 22 million euros reported by the Bank of Albania is expected to increase even further, seeing that December is a very busy month with transactions.
At the end of last year, the Bank of Albania announced that during 2023 alone, the AIPS system has saved Albanians approximately 22 million euros./ Scan
