The expenses to pay off the court bills for unfair leave from work cost the Albanians 1.4 billion lek or about 13.8 million euros last year alone. The data show that most of the damage, almost 78 percent of the total, was caused by central government institutions.
" People continue to be fired for political reasons. The courts, in most cases, find that the dismissal was illegal. The injured person receives about 12 salaries and this causes a significant economic damage to the state ", says Gertiana Hasalla.
Political and employment history has shown that after the election campaign and depending on the results, unfair dismissals increase. The political rotation after the 2013 elections cost Albanians 3.38 billion ALL for unfair dismissals. The years 2015, 2017 or 2021 also brought costs for the taxpayers.
In total, in 9 years, 15.4 billion lek or about 152 million euros have come out of the state coffers for political resignations and appointments.
" We will see that in some municipalities, militants of one side will first take the place of the other side. This happens often. Those who have been at work will most likely get it later ," adds Hasalla.
In order to discourage illegal dismissal decisions, there have been several proposals to hold the heads of institutions accountable. All the initiatives so far have not been implemented, despite the pressure from the European Union in the context of the integration negotiations.
