Almost 900 thousand tons of oil were extracted from the Albanian underground last year. This amount would be enough to meet all the country's needs, but it went to export because we no longer have a refinery. Consequently, citizens are facing high prices.
Last year, over 891 thousand tons of crude oil were extracted from the Albanian underground. In relation to 2022, the amount of oil produced in the country has remained almost the same, while it has expanded by about 200 thousand tons compared to 2021.
Data from the General Directorate of Customs show that in order to meet all needs, last year an amount of 614 thousand tons was imported from abroad, while almost 900 thousand tons were produced in the country.
So if the oil had been processed locally, Albania would not only be able to meet all its needs, but would also have surplus for export. In the absence of a refinery, citizens are paying dearly for fuel, on average a liter of diesel at gas stations costs 177 ALL. Gasoline is sold for the same amount, while gas is sold for 59 Lek.
"Very expensive compared to the salaries we receive. In Macedonia and Kosovo, oil costs almost 1 euro. 1,800 lek", said the drivers for A2.
According to the calculations of the Institute of Statistics, the value of the crude oil produced in the country last year is almost 40 billion lek or about 400 million euros.
Most of it went to France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Spain and Great Britain./ A2CNN
