Albanian Railways has opened a tender worth 1.5 billion lek (about 15.7 million euros) for the implementation of the railway line project connecting the Public Transport Terminal with the Central Train Station in Tirana.
The turnkey contract includes a 4 km extension of the existing Durrës-Tirana line and aims to integrate urban transport with the national railway network.
The tender also includes the construction of two intermediate stops, Tirana 1 and Tirana 2, which aim to maximize access and connection to local public transport networks. Another part of the project is the completion of the remaining works for the bridge over the Tirana Ring Road, which will span 71 meters.
According to the tender documents, the contract also includes the rehabilitation of local roads affected by the works, including asphalting, widening and construction of sidewalks, as well as the installation of safety barriers and noise reduction solutions. The line will be electrified and equipped with signaling and a telecommunications system integrated with the existing Durrës-Tirana section of the line.
" The section under study (PTT–TCC) begins with a curve with a radius of 1000 m and ends with a straight segment at the Tirana CCS station. From Tirana PTT to Tirana CCS, the speed is 70-100 km/h, with a minimum radius at km 36+420, of 150 m. But the group of experts of the Albanian Railways, through the proposed idea sketch, opens the possibility of revising this radius and maintaining the radius of the existing railway track of 300m ," the documents state.
The Tirana-Durres project and the Rinas extension have been underway since 2021 and are still in progress without a precise completion date. The line is designed for speeds of 70–100 km/h, with the possibility of revising the minimum radii to optimize the route and compliance with the existing track. / Monitor
