Imported cherries hit farmers/Local production remains without a market, price

Andi Toromani, from the village of Shilbater in Elbasan, owns 500 early cherry trees to capture the desired price.

But the lack of subsidies leads the trader to buy foreign cherries, because domestic production gives him less profit.

" Consume cherries from Albanian soil and not Greek ones, they are organic," said farmer Andi Toromani.

Andi says that even when traders buy cherries from his land, they sell 1 kg of cherries for 150% more than the original price. The high price of cherries, which flatters traders, causes dissatisfaction among farmers and consumers.

"This is a super short-tailed cherry. I am selling a kg of cherries for 6 thousand lek, but in Tirana I see it being sold for 15 thousand lek. This high price keeps the consumer away and for this reason we sell less ," he said.

Dishonest trade forces the 37-year-old to live between the village of Elbasan and the city of Cologne, Germany. His demands to permanently move to his homeland are basic for a farmer who will work the land.

" I emigrated to Greece, Italy and now to Germany, where I work in construction. But I have my eyes here, I want to return and I only ask for light, water and roads. You can't keep the tree with cans, irrigation requires a system ," said Andi.

Extreme temperatures throughout the winter and spring have resulted in lower production for cherry farmers./ TCH
