
Albanian citizens are expected to face a new wave of price increases for many products in the country.
Due to the crisis in the Red Sea, shipping companies from China are no longer sailing in this maritime space, opting for new, longer routes, as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have started to attack merchant ships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones late last year.
But how much will the costs increase from this new route? According to data from transport companies provided by SCAN, on 15.12.2023 the price was 2300 USD for a sea transport container, while currently it has increased to 4170 USD.
Also, this situation will cause delays in transport. If before the cargo arrived at the port in 40-45 days, now the duration reaches up to 20 days more. But how much are the imports and what do we import the most from China? In 2023, the value of product imports from China reached nearly 977 million dollars, a very high value for a market like Albania.
Among the most imported products that are expected to be affected by the increase in prices because manufacturers will download the increased costs of transportation to the goods, are clothing items, whose value for 2023 reaches 73 million dollars; various means of transport with a value of 58.6 million dollars, cast iron and steel and their articles, plastics, furniture, toys, tires and articles thereof, paper and organic chemicals.
Also on the list are other items that, although they are not imported in high quantity and value, will still be affected by the situation, such as aluminum and its articles, work tools, ceramic products, grains, wood, etc./ Scan
