Secretary Rubio has sanctioned two important officials of Montenegro, a country that had not yet been affected by the "non grata" decree.
A very big news happened today in Washington, namely at the headquarters of the US Department of State. Secretary Marco Rubio took out his fountain pen and signed two fresh documents, reactivating the terrible 7031(C), so well-known in the Balkans and Albania.
Secretary Rubio has sanctioned two important officials of Montenegro, a country that had not yet been affected by the "non grata" decree.
Respectively, the former head of the Supreme Court, Vesna Medenica, and the former mayor of the country's economic capital, Budva, Milo Bozovic, have been declared non grata.
Both are defendants and face charges of profiting from organized crime, namely cocaine trafficking, and being corrupted by parts of the local mafia.
Medenica is politically a supporter of former President Milo Djukanovic, of the opposition Party of Socialist Democrats, while Bozovic is a primary exponent of one of the main parties of the ruling majority, the Democratic Front, a pro-Serbian and pro-Putin force, which holds the post of Speaker of Parliament and has half of the government, as well as controlling several municipalities.
The reinstatement of the non grata application by the administration of President Donald Trump, precisely in a region like the Balkans, is political evidence of the leaving in force of all decisions made so far by the State Department by previous administrations.
Although the propaganda that non gratas are a "Sorosian invention" really influences public opinion, the fact is that most of them in Albania were signed by Donald Trump's Secretaries of State, namely Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo.
This decision by Washington on Montenegro is not just a bellwether, but a clear political act that is increasingly directed at the political entities that protect and shelter these people.
Remember when Sali Berisha was sanctioned in 2021 and his media entourage cheered when US State Department official Gabriel Escobar met with Milorad Dodik in Bosnia? Defending the argument that if the people love him, America has nothing to do. Today, Milorad Dodik only has Moscow and Beijing as his addresses.
Vesna Medenica, elected at a time when Milo Djukanovic's party had a majority, was not protected by this political force, which declared that they supported justice.
For Bozovic, there has also been no political protection from his party, but he has not yet been declared non grata.
Meanwhile, in North Macedonia, no political party, starting from VRMO, which had its former leader, to SDSM or DUI, which has several important politicians, has defended the exponents sanctioned by the US.
The only entities that have defended the sanctioned non grata are Dodik's party in Bosnia and Sali Berisha's DP in Albania.
However, it is very likely that the signal coming from Washington will go in one ear and out the other in the DP's political circles.
The media support group will continue to use the same tactic, ignoring it, as well as counterattacking with more serious accusations on the other side.
And this is precisely where the real crux of the issue lies in the Albanian opposition. There are many figures within it who are convinced that Berisha's non grata status and the criminal cases against him are an obstacle to its political growth.
But after the fate of Lulzim Basha, who dared to suspend him from the parliamentary group, they think that a soft battle should be waged in the DP. A battle where everyone except the big one is attacked.
Ervin Saljanji, in the interviews he gave at the start of the new season, announced that he is considering and will start a political movement. Which, according to him, should be done by recognizing the importance and political weight of Sali Berisha.
Who, even though he did not meet Saljanj when he was released from prison, formally leaving him only the conference room, is not harmed by the "soft movements".
On the contrary, through a seemingly "incandescent" and debate-driven policy, it aims to show the public that the DP has a galvanizing society of ideas and opinions.
It is not surprising that at the appropriate stages such as local or parliamentary elections, Berisha makes an alliance with all the "elements of soft movements". Be it the mayor of Kavaja, Saljanji, Myslim Murrizi or other politicians. Whom if this happens, he will attract to his battles, which are apolitical, simply a climb behind the chair by blocking every process.
By releasing a PR strategy, which was heard by one of the media icons close to him, in which all those who do not accept that the elections were not stolen on May 11 are called "trash".
Opinion, which is supposed to be the result of arguments on dinner panels or in the Assembly hall. And yet, non grata is there and will remain forever. Even if the officials who formed it are investigated or punished.
The outcry against Boris Johnson, who is a right-wing conservative and Trump ally, simply because he is being investigated, shows precisely the orientation of this policy.
They quench their anger at the doctor's visit with hatred for any enemy who has a problem at work, in the country, or in the family.
