No matter how much Eliot Engel is drawn from former positions, influenced by the Albanian lobby, or sponsored by him, none of us has the right to preach a lower standard for Kosovo than his.
The tragicomedy of a good part of Albanians is that they become much more pro-American than the Americans themselves. So true is this that we often forget our national interest in being removed as the strongest state in the world. This endlessly repeated fable, this time, has appeared in a new form, after the friction that Prime Minister Albin Kurti had with American diplomacy, regarding the Kosovo-Serbia conflict.
In Tirana and Prishtina, there are not a few who have pointed out that Albini is taking us away from the USA, that he is not coordinating with them, that he is creating rifts with the empire that liberated us and made us a state.
Instead of asking rational questions we produce emotional experiences.
Again, the example of how we should do the first, how we should behave differently, has come to us ironically from across the Atlantic. A former congressman, the head of the foreign committee of the House of Representatives, known for his connections with the Albanians, Eliot Engel, has raised a dilemma opposite to what our public is buzzing about. Instead of joining the chorus lamenting the breakdown of the Kosovo-USA relationship, he asked the question: Is Washington wrong in this case?
In an article for the "Foreing Policy" reference, he put forward the thesis that the concern to maintain peace and stability is pushing the Biden administration to favor Vučić. While in Tirana and Pristina blame Albin Kurti for not coordinating with the allies, for provoking with the issue of license plates, for replacing "Oso Kuka" in Leposevaç, the former congressman points the finger at Vuçiçi. He mentions with facts that his country has not punished Serbia sufficiently, nor that it stood behind the boycott of the elections in the north, nor that it used violence against KFOR, nor that it encourages its compatriots not to accept license plates, nor that it mistreats until "ethnic cleansing by administrative means" of the Albanian minority in Presheva, Medvegja and Bujanovc.
With the foresight of a veteran of American foreign policy, he issues an ominous warning: the establishment of an association of municipalities with a Serbian majority is not an ideal solution for calming the conflict. So according to him, what the US and the EU are persistently seeking, as a means to establish peace, is simply a temporary solution, because Engel says, "The association will not solve the fundamental problem - Serbia's aggressive opposition to a Kosovo independent".
Now let's take this position and compare it a bit with the one held by Prime Minister Rama.
No matter how much Eliot Engel is drawn from former positions, influenced by the Albanian lobby, or sponsored by him, none of us has the right to preach a lower standard for Kosovo than his. We cannot be the standard-bearers of the United States any more than this veteran of her service, but above all we cannot love our interest any less than he does. So often, before asking the question, where is Albini and Washington wrong, it is up to us to understand why the latter, these days, is petting Vučić a little too much?
