Similarities and differences between the classic mafia family and the mafia state, the role of the "Capo di tutti capi" and the case of ...
The sociological term “mafia state” was defined in 2016 by Hungarian sociologist Bálint Magyar. In this context, I present some comparative observations.
The mafia state is usually organized on the principles of the Sicilian "Cosa Nostra". At the top stands the "Capo di tutti capi", who speaks and orders, while the subordinate bosses carry out the orders, swearing absolute loyalty to him until death, as the wisest and best "man of honor".
The same logic works at the national and local levels. All together they constitute a happy mafia family, built on blind obedience and total loyalty. Their faith is in everything, above everything and under it.
Political power is the key to the mafia state. Figuratively speaking, he who has a gun in his right hand will also have gold in his left. Therefore, the main godfather makes sure that the subordinate godfathers permanently derive their power from his. In this regard, he occasionally publicly humiliates them so that everyone understands that he is everything and they are nothing.
In such a state there is no room for internal conflict. It is enough for the leader to expel a member and he immediately loses all importance. However, material benefits are usually not taken away, because the fear of losing them, accompanied by punishment and humiliation, guarantees strict observance of omerta. Practically, repentant testimony is impossible.
Hierarchy in a mafia state is important, but not essential. Often a driver, close relative or friend of the main godfather has more power than an officially recognized income earner, advisor, operations manager and the like. In this context, many members of the mafia family have a state function only to cover their tracks and sow confusion. Even if no one asks them for anything, their life playing puppet roles is worth it.
The mafia state aims to bring the media, the judiciary, political parties and all institutions, without exception, under its control. This is achieved gradually through bribery, intimidation and, in certain cases, the use of violence. Meanwhile, the appearance of legal order is carefully maintained: laws are applied selectively and arbitrarily, often deliberately distorted.
As in classic mafia mythology, the mafia head of state guarantees the impunity of his subordinates. As long as he protects them, they protect him. The principle of mutual interest remains fundamental.
Just as the godfather of Cosa Nostra speaks of honor, family, and traditions, the head of a mafia state constantly uses the rhetoric of external and internal enemies, traitors, and threats. Behind this language, lies the appropriation of the country's resources.
