Catholics make up a little more than 1/10 of the country's population, while their family members make up almost 1/2 of the political prisoners during the communist dictatorship!
In recent days, the Ministry of Finance published the list of family members who will benefit from the fifth installment of compensation for political prisoners during the communist dictatorship .
From looking at the names/surnames on the list, it turns out that almost half are from Catholic families!
On the other hand, only 11.5% of adult Albanians have a traditional Catholic family background. This is the result of an in-depth statistical study that I conducted with the well-known writer/researcher Bashkim Shehu, supported by the German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
So, Catholics make up a little more than 1/10 of the country's population, while their family members make up almost 1/2 of the political prisoners during the communist dictatorship!
How many Catholics are currently believers?
While only 11.5% of Albanian adults have a traditional Catholic family background, they are the most devout believers. Thus, a full 73% of adults from traditionally Catholic families personally believe in their family’s religion. This percentage is even higher (80.3%) in the 40-64 age group (the generation that was formed when religion was banned by the communist regime). On average, among adults from families with other religious backgrounds, only 54.1% believe in their family’s religion (see table below).
A full 33.5% of adults from traditionally Catholic families go to church regularly (at least once a month), compared to only 20.3% of adults from families with other religious backgrounds.
A full 33.4% of adults from traditionally Catholic families observe Lent, compared to only 20.9% of adults from families with other religious backgrounds who observe Lent or fast.
And so on, adults from traditionally Catholic families have higher indicators of religious belief than others, ending with the very significant indicator of praying in secret during the communist regime – their families prayed in secret during the communist regime despite the risk of going to prison at a rate of 61.1%, compared to only 36.1% among others.
