After 60 years of creativity, the work of Ismail Kadare is now distinguished as a literary project, which started as an inspiration and ended as a mastery. His works continue to maintain the independence of time and at the same time possess a defined place within the whole. This is very rare in the history of Albanian and world literature as well.
For more than six decades, since the work of Ismail Kadare gained the attention of the public and studies, there has been no qualification and counter-qualification without being used, from its glorification to the belittling and rejection of his work.
In this recent era, more than the content of Kadare's work, there has been debate about some more general relationships, such as literature and the state and powers; literature and politics and ideology; the writer and freedom of censorship.
Since 1954, when he published his first book, "Boyish Inspirations", Kadare has tried and elaborated almost all types or subtypes of literature, from sketches and reports to novels and dramas. His work does not miss any era: prehistoric and historical of the Albanian people, from the misty mythological times, the pre-national period, the time of the formation of ethnic consciousness, the era of European humanism, the difficult imperial centuries and the historical period, to the present and the seasons today's politics.
Kadare, with his work, returned to Albanian literature a dimension missing for a long time, the European dimension, which it had lost since Gjergj Kastrioti and Marlin Barleti. Despite some valiant efforts by writers of the first half of the 20th century, this size could not be regained even then.
After 60 years of creativity, the work of Ismail Kadare is now distinguished as a literary project, which started as an inspiration and ended as a mastery. His works continue to maintain the independence of time and at the same time possess a defined place within the whole. This is very rare in the history of Albanian and world literature as well.
This is exactly the defining quality that can be observed by studying the literary legacy of Ismail Kadare. It was written and debated under completely different political and poetic conditions: under conditions of restriction and freedom, under conditions of inspiration and rejection, under conditions of control and censorship or under conditions of complete creative freedom.
The literature of I. Kadare has done an extraordinary service to the Albanian discourse. During these three decades, while scholars were divided into two groups to discuss whether the language we had was worth keeping or should be destroyed to build a new one, I. Kadare proved that our Albanian, the standard Albanian, has a soundtrack of wonderful and it is an open language and not at all fanatical.
Kadare remains the most elite representative of the Albanian nation. And for this reason, he is the superman who will not come to Albanian land for a long time. It was a fate and a great gift for Albanians, that he came to grow among us after the 50s.
His departure to the afterlife remains a sad news for every Albanian who feels he has a European identity with Albanian roots. A very painful loss for Albanian literature and its balances, for European and world literature as well.
The humble reader will miss the last crusader of love, the Albanian language its master.
