So, it's not something to be happy about that Trump simply mentions Kosovo. It's something to be happy about that he's just confirming its independence.
There is enthusiasm among Albanians that President Trump has cited his success in the Kosovo-Serbia conflict as an example for stopping the Israel-Iran war.
In fact, it is a statement that should be taken seriously only for President Trump's willingness to be involved in the history of the Kosovo-Serbia conflict. But it is not serious news, neither for the Kosovo-Serbia conflict, nor for the Iran-Israel one.
The 2020 Kosovo-Serbia agreement, signed at the White House, each side with the US, did not have any major success other than establishing Kosovo's diplomatic relations with Israel. Politically, there were consequences.
The most serious consequence was the arrest of Hashim Thaçi and his transfer to The Hague, in a process that President Trump's rivals in Washington seem to have been behind. A few months before the agreement, President Trump's administration had undermined the mandate of Prime Minister Albin Kurti, creating an opposition government in Kosovo, led by Avdullah Hoti.
All of this led to Albin Kurti, with part of the LDK led by Vjosa Osmani, winning the majority in the new elections of 2021 and throwing the Washington agreement in the trash.
The greatest contribution of the US to Kosovo remains the year 1999: the bombing of Serbia and the liberation of Kosovo. The agreement negotiated in Trump's office is a diplomatic routine that has produced political consequences in Kosovo, but not any significant balance in relations between the two countries.
This is why the political class in Kosovo must become aware of the delicate position the country finds itself in and the fact that little is actually thought about it.
President Trump's interest in the Kosovo-Serbia conflict is a good thing, if not essential. In fact, the ease with which he mentions the Washington agreement – and even more so the context of the mention, in the midst of the Israeli-Iranian bombings – is a clear indication of the shallowness of the information he has about this conflict.
And this is a signal that Kosovo is neither the center of the world nor is it the darling of the US in the Balkans. As Christopher Hill, one of the people with the most contributions to Kosovo's freedom on behalf of the US, pointed out, America already has other interests in Serbia, which are not related to Kosovo at all.
Therefore, it is not something to be happy about that Trump simply mentions Kosovo. It is something to be happy about only the fact that he confirms its independence. Everything else shows how little interest Washington currently has in Kosovo. In fact, the current US ambassador to Pristina has not yet come out to react to the famous 32-time vote for Albulena, as the former US ambassador did in 2016 when Albin Kurti, Isa Mustafa, Ramush Haradinaj and Fatmir Limaj joined forces to overthrow Hashim Thaçi and blocked the Parliament.
Then American Ambassador Tracy Ann Jacobson made that famous statement: "Don't give up your job."
Now, in a way, President Trump said this too – but without knowing at all what is happening in Kosovo.
