Why do Albanian politicians pray at "Morning Prayers" in Washington, while in Tirana they fight each other 365 days a year?

"Morning Prayers" has turned into a theatrical competition to see who has the most connections in Washington DC.

The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast Foundation (hereafter referred to as the 'Prayer Breakfast') is to facilitate and organize Prayers under the leadership of the co-chairs of the United States Congress. Founded in 1953, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower accepted an invitation to join members of Congress at a shared table, this annual Breakfast aims to bring together political representatives to pray collectively for the American nation, the President of the United States, and other national and international leaders, in the spirit of love and reconciliation, as Jesus of Nazareth taught nearly 2,000 years ago.

(Speech by former Representative JC Watts Jr.)

But among Albanian politicians, this noble idea has turned into organized hypocrisy. The fashion for “morning prayers” has turned into a political farce: lots of noise, lots of ceremony, lots of cameras, and all financed with state or party money. They are prayers for image, for PR and personal interests, not for justice, responsibility or public welfare.

“Morning Prayers” have become a theatrical competition to see who has the most connections in DC. Political actors followed by cameras, luxury corridors and photo hunts with famous figures. A false morality, without transparency and without responsibility, which year after year becomes more and more contemptible and shameful. For our politicians, now God and prayers are decorum; the citizen is simply a statistic, the one who pays their generous bills.
Official prayers in unison, real sins in practice.

With public money, we are sold morality in front of the cameras, as if in the capital of world diplomacy, they are working diligently for the citizen. In reality, these ceremonies remain gloomy and suspicious: God is transformed into decor, the citizen into a victim, and when prayer becomes a business and political capital, sin is called an "official ceremony."

In the US, this ritual exists for reasons that go beyond religion: as moral reflection and humility, as a call for unity beyond politics, as a historical American tradition, as soft power diplomacy, and as a message of universal values, of peace, reconciliation, justice, forgiveness, and love for others.

The essential question is: what do our politicians reflect with these costly prayers in DC, when the country lacks dialogue between parties, let alone unity?

Apparently, for them, mosques, churches and cathedrals are "too small" for prayer; they definitely need an 8,000-kilometer flight over the Atlantic, sleeping and eating in one of the most expensive places in the world, all paid for with public money by one of the poorest countries in the world.

These are in reality public prayers, but the sins of politicians remain private. The bill is paid by the citizen, the one who does not have money for electricity, for heating, for basic living. Ironically, the more our politicians “pray” year after year in Washington DC, the more hostile they become among themselves on the most vital state issues. For our politicians, it seems that God exists only in DC but not in Pristina and Tirana.
