These two were the members of a jury with 6 people who would select the new multifunctional center of Tirana. The other four members were the architects Pablo Bofill, Stefano Boeri, Filippo Innocenti and Freek Persyn. In short, a jury made up of international and Albanian leaders.
The entire event was broadcast live by most of the media in the country. Especially those close to the government. And all Albanians learned that a 200-meter high tower would be built behind the Opera House. But at that time, the fact that a new tower was being built in the center of Tirana did not bother anyone.
Just as the 60-story tower that is being built on Kavaja street does not bother you today, the one that is being built on public land at the former Chamber of Commerce, the other one on public land at the parking lot behind the former National Theater, the malls with towers that have been erected in the park of the lake and the 50-story monsters being built in the heart of the Block. Neither the civil society nor the media were concerned, which today are saying that the tower belongs to Sali Berisha. Maybe then, they didn't know that the tower they said is the diamond in Tirana's necklace, was Xen's diamond. Maybe Maybe.
But as if this was not enough, on March 8 of this year the National Council of the Territory approved the permit for the tower selected in the October competition. Oligarkia.al was the only media that reported the permit and slammed the decision to add another concrete monster to the concreted center of the capital.
It was only two months before the local elections. Tirana had entered the hottest phase of the campaign, but even then the permit did not impress anyone. It's good for Saliu that he had Xeni's tower, but surprisingly neither the rest of the opposition nor even the new political forces were concerned. But coherence matters little.
Politically, the battle for the towers in Tirana ended on May 14. Belind Këlliçi publicly promised in the campaign that he would not allow the construction of towers in the center of Tirana, while Erjon Veliaj declared that the towers were necessary to change the face of the capital and to save the land, which it has for sale. Citizens made the decision. Veliaj received 58,000 more votes. Belua went home, democracy worked.
On the other hand, the battle for the tower in question is already closed. There is a private relationship between the builders and the owners of the land for development. The agreement was certified by the government and the municipality, which signed the construction permit. Now nothing stops the erection of the Mount Tirana tower. Or even if someone dares to stop it, Agim Zeqo with Ilir Shtufi as the builders of the tower and with them the owners of the land will receive compensation to the last penny for the lost profits, an indisputable right that originates from construction permit with Edi Rama's signature. And those hundreds of millions of euros will be paid to the citizens.
And yet this is no longer a matter of public interest. That the public interest there has already been lost, since the moment Edi Rama signed the construction permit. But this is a battle, which is fought for another issue.
The majority has sunk deep into the great corrupt swamp of the incinerators. And now he is trying to hang himself on the tower, which he signed himself to save from drowning. Oh by the way. But something must be accepted. This smoke tower was a masterpiece of propaganda and "spin doctoring" on a global scale. For the first time in history, the government that signed it was not to blame, but the opposition.
