Today, the PD is not only fragmented like a broken mirror on the floor, but also facing an old existential dilemma: to enter the difficult path of building an alternative, or to give in to the easy temptation of nostalgia for the shepherd of old man who continues to sing psalms on top of the window of the house?!
Even today in the Democratic Party, the year 2005 is seen as a magical moment, which brought what was thought impossible: power and governance. It was a moment when Sali Berisha realized that his ruined reputation related to the loan sharks and the dead of 1997, would not take him far in the race against Nano. He did the only wise thing he could do. He hid behind a platform (alleged) and a group of men and women who allowed to enter the corridors and podiums of the party. Concepts such as the opening of the party, the creation of the KOP and the approach of educated young people were thus born, ideas which were elaborated with insistence in the media and public opinion, to create the perception that the party and its leader had changed. Sali Berisha hid behind the KOP boys and the former motionists who had returned to the fold, to lie to the voters bored by eight years of the Socialist government.
Camouflaging the Doctor behind a platform paid off. Berisha won the elections but did nothing to move away from his identikit of the first decade of pluralism. Gërdeci and January 21 showed that he was simply dressed in other clothes, but not with a new mentality. The electoral operation 19 years ago, of the transformation of PD from an unrepresentable party to the public, into a political force that talked about projects and new ideas (with an old leader), is a solid proof of the fact that the vote is suggested, if the product sold and packaged beautifully.

About an old and worn-out leader, or about a new political platform, with a new leading figure, who is not named either Sali Berisha or Lulzim Basha?!
In 2005, the Democratic Party had the opportunity to make a hybrid election. He held the head of the party and let him learn by heart a few paragraphs enough to give the impression that "he is no longer the first". Today, when too much water has flown over the bridges, that experiment just doesn't work anymore.
However, within the Reestablishment they remember that they can defy both time and its Spartan laws. They continue to shout "Down with communism" and "Long live Sali Berisha", although the former has been dead for 33 years, while the latter turns 80 in eight months. Beyond all logic and digital reality, a list of MPs recently joined Reestablishment, in a clear attempt to save their personal political fortune, sinking the fate of the entire party. They want the mandate, but not the DP!
Repeating the precedent of 2005 today is a meringue dream, as Shkodraans used to say about the cinema. To transplant that victory today into the mosaic of DP factions and currents means not having any sense of political judgment and realism. To hope that for Berisha there is still a late hour train, which is expected to pass by his feet in 2025, is infantile naivety.
Grouping around the old shepherd and leaving behind the vital process of bringing the party out of the 33-year Albanian transition era, where this party has been and is a determining factor, is today marking the final degradation of PD. Maybe the nostalgia for the glorious times and for the old party leader is the most irrational act that today's opposition is doing, in the open service of extending the power of Edi Rama. Who has the luxury of thinking calmly, from the height of three (soon four) governing mandates, about the third successor at the head of the SP after the fall of communism, while his opponents are tied with a rope to the legs of the first chair .
The Democratic Party is creating the negative precedent of submitting its fate to blind idolatry for Sali Berisha. An anti-historical and self-isolating attitude, which indirectly damages the entire Albanian political spectrum, which has long suffered from the deep political senility of the party leaders. Albania is eager for ideas and new faces. Clinging to the false idols of the traumatic past only delays this urgent need to break out of the vicious circle of a fragile, incomplete and corrupt democracy.
