Flori's challenge, combining vote arithmetic with political chemistry

But what could the political chemistry be like among the 45% of Tirana participants on May 11 who did not vote for the "left" (PS+ +PSD+"Together Movement")?

Before Berisha announced that the DP and its allies would support the candidacy of Florjan Binaj (popularly known as the “Orange Flower”), the arithmetic argument of finding a candidate who would attract the votes of the May 11 participants who did not vote for the SP prevailed. In fact, the SP received only 49% of the votes of the participants in the territory of the Municipality of Tirana (48.9% to be exact) – so the arithmetic argument seemed convincing at first glance.

But while Florjan Binaj was declared a candidate by the DP and its allies, Arlind Qori, the Chairman of the “Together Movement”, announced his candidacy for mayor, in direct competition with Binaj in the anti-government segment. Meanwhile, Tom Doshi, the Chairman of the PSD, does not seem likely to support Binaj’s candidacy. These two parties received over 6% of the votes in the territory of the Municipality of Tirana on May 11 (see the graph below).

So the arithmetic argument of votes falls apart right from the beginning of Binaj's electoral race - out of the 51% who did not vote for the SP, over 6% have no chance of voting for Florin either...

Some hardened PD militants may find it difficult to mobilize for a candidate made famous by the show "Orange," but Berisha's strong support for him may help them overcome this impasse.

More difficult is the mobilization of voters of other small parties.

Among the parties in the DP-ASHM coalition, the PL, PR, PAA and PDK have publicly supported Binaj's candidacy (the PDIU has not), but it remains to be seen how mobilized those who fought for their personal votes on May 11 will be on the ground...

Among the opposition parties outside the DP coalition, Lapaj's "Shqipëria Bëhet", Shabani's "Nisma", Shehaj's "Mundësia", and Shehi-Alibeaj's "Right for Development" have publicly supported Binaj's candidacy (Basha's Euro-Atlanticists, not), but it remains to be seen how mobilized those who fought for their personal votes on May 11 will be on the ground...

In short, Florjan Binaj must combine the arithmetic of votes with the political chemistry of the parties that support him, to get more than the 100 thousand votes that Këlliçi received in 2023. Because in front of him there is a purple wall of 160 thousand votes...
