How Kamala Harris Can Beat Donald Trump and Unite America
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump /

If she possesses the strength and wisdom to appeal to all Americans as a unifying figure, she can not only defeat Donald Trump, but also build the political support needed to help heal our fractured nation, and in solving many important issues that are challenging us...

The impressive speed with which Democrats have rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee is evidence of their eagerness to defeat former President Donald Trump in the November election, and to prevent a second Trump presidency. , which would have disastrous consequences.

Also, having won the nomination without having to face primary voters after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on Sunday, it is now especially important for Harris to show ordinary voters that she is running as a politician. center, which aims to unite the American nation.

The good news is that Trump's radical policy positions give Harris tremendous freedom to do so. However, she must take some specific actions in the coming weeks to signal her intent to the broad swath of voters whose support she will need to defeat Trump in November.

First, Harris needs to let voters know that she understands that the past few years of high inflation have been difficult for many struggling families. While the economic situation is generally good, inflation caused by the drop in demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic has hit middle-income and working-class families the hardest.

Despite Trump's efforts to enact more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, Harris should end Trump's big handouts to the wealthy, and instead shift to a temporary tax cut for middle-class voters and that worker. This will show more than anything else that Harris is truly on the side of ordinary Americans.

Second, Harris must choose her running mate from one of the swing states. The best choice would be Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who has governed as a centrist. For example, he has made it clear that he opposes any kind of ban on natural gas production, which provides jobs for tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians and lowers energy costs.

However, like Harris, Shapiro strongly supports fiscal incentives for clean energy and the transition to energy with less polluting emissions into the atmosphere. Of course, Harris could also consider a candidate from Michigan or Wisconsin. Another option could be Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a veteran and distinguished astronaut with a 25-year career. But Pennsylvania seems her most logical option.

Third, Harris needs to show voters that she has grown and matured during her tenure as vice president, knowing all too well real-world issues like illegal immigration. Also, concerns about the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East must be addressed.

And Harris already understands these things. As he stated in an interview for The New York Times after being appointed vice president: "I am not trying to restructure society. But I try to deal with the issues that wake people up in the middle of the night."

This approach suggests a greater focus on everyday economic issues that concern the average voter most, such as curbing the cost of prescription drugs, tax measures to help middle-income Americans save money and have a comfortable life when they retire, as well as efforts to help young people afford to buy their first homes.

Fourth, Harris must directly challenge Donald Trump's political strategy of fomenting a divisive and sometimes violent culture war. This isn't just about attacking Trump's claim that he didn't lose the 2020 election but stole it, and his plans to destroy elements of American democracy.

It is equally important that Harris confront Trump about his demonization of all American citizens who do not share his political views. One way to do this could be for Harris to appear on right-wing outlets like Fox TV, showing her willingness to address the concerns of conservative Americans.

It's a strategy that has worked very well for California Gov. Gavin Neesom and others. Finally - but perhaps most importantly - Harris should embrace a positive and hopeful vision of the future of the country, and especially of the future of young people. Trump's negativism should be a weakness, not a political strength. The most successful politicians in American history, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, once embraced a forward-looking vision of economic growth that benefited all Americans, even as we as Americans preserve and support it in overall our moral leadership in the world.

This broad-minded, generous vision of a brighter future for the US not only appeals to America's instinctive optimism, but will be crucial to diminishing the lure of the dark, manipulative, and grievance-filled politics of Donald Trump.

Because Kamala Harris has become the Democratic nominee in such an unusual way, it is extremely important that she appeals directly to Americans of all political persuasions, especially political moderates and conservatives.

If she possesses the strength and wisdom to appeal to all Americans as a unifying figure, she can not only defeat Donald Trump, but also build the political support needed to help heal our fractured nation, and in solving many important issues that are challenging us./ Adapted Pamphlet from "The Hill"
