Today is our great Independence Day, which was achieved after 500 years of barbaric occupation by the Ottomans and their platform of Ottomanism.
But what is Ottomanism?
Ottomanism is a religious and racial doctrine to assimilate conquered peoples. Ottomanism took away our love for work, for the arts, for language, and created a distorted relationship with time. The Ottomans convinced us that delay is not a bad thing.
A job that is not done today may be done tomorrow or may not be done at all. Delay became our national trait. That's how we were late for 500 years.
A great misfortune of the horrific consequences of Ottomanism in Albania is the lack of photography in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. If there had been photographs to show the misery of the Albanians of that time, today's Albanians would be amazed. Those who defend this cruelty would be ashamed, although the lack of evidence cannot be an excuse for those who defend the extermination of their nation.
At that time, the streets of Albania were filled with ragged, malnourished and sick people.
A third of the country lived in swamps. There was no school, no hospital, no port, the lands were not reclaimed and no railway passed through here. Albania was an isolated territory from which only cattle and soldiers were taken and where nothing but weapons were used to suppress those who did not obey. The tools used by the Ottomans were violence, hunger, malaria, murder and taxes. But all the features of Ottomanism classify it as one of the most savage forms of colonialism. Those who do not know what Ottomanism is should know that this barbaric empire taxed people according to their religious affiliation.
Anyone who was not a Muslim paid a tax. This tax on religion was called jizve. States impose taxes on property, land, labor, profit, and trade. The Ottoman Empire also imposed a tax on the soul, which is why it is more heartless than all the invaders who have fallen on our backs. Jizve was a kind of jizve where our national conscience was boiled with stagnant water. Colonialisms are always severe, harmful, and destructive, however, there are several types of colonialism.
We suffered the worst.
At the time when the Spanish, Portuguese and then the English and French took to the seas to conquer the world, we who were very close to them had the blackest fate. The Ottoman Turks, that is, the Ottomans who did not have fleets to go to America and Asia to discover China, or Africa, attacked the Balkans. In 1492, when Christopher Columbus went to America, the Ottomans completely conquered Albania after almost 50 years of effort and fierce siege. Skanderbeg had died in 1468 and Shkodra had been conquered in 1479. After these two defeats, a phase of brutal conquest began and our misfortune is that unlike that of many other peoples, we were colonized by a people more uncivilized than us. In every sense of the word, the Ottomans of the 1400s were much more undeveloped than the Albanians. They were small tribes that became a state by conquering us, we were small states that turned into tribes by being conquered.
It is cynical to say, but we were less fortunate than the American Indians, or many African peoples who were conquered by peoples more developed than them. We fell into a moral dampness that rotted us for 500 years.
Therefore, Ottomanism was not an invasion but a colonialization. When the Ottomans left, they left nothing behind.
Post-Ottoman Albania emerged as the poorest, most plundered, most ignorant, sickest, smallest and hungriest country in Europe. No enemy has treated us worse than the bloodthirsty Ottomans. They stripped us of the need to work, to dream and to live with justice. They separated us from the trunk and left us to rot in their sucking swamp.
Without the Ottoman occupation, our history would have been brighter and today we would be a larger and fully integrated European people. Therefore, the effort of Ismail Qemali who, passing through the mud of time, managed to declare Albania independent on November 28, 1912, is perhaps the most courageous act in our history. All the evils that we have suffered and are still suffering today have their source there. In those 500 years of darkness, humiliation and national humility.
Ottomanism is our disease that we must cure to the end. I am convinced that we will succeed. We will be cured.

Shume e drejte, por të mos harrojne se pushtimi ishte i dyfishte. Gjuhen shqipe e luftonin se bashku si pushtuesit turq, ashtu edhe kisha greke. Kjo e fundit luftonte me shume orthodhokset shqiptare qe deshen mesimin e gjuhes amtare. Me gjeni nje shtet ku prifterinjte mallkojne gjuhen e nje populli tjeter!? Shpetuam deri diku nga Turqia, por jemi ende gjysme koloni e zeshkaneve të Pontit.

Të gjitha të këqijat na kanë ardhur nga sundimi 500 vjeçare e Turqisë. Të gjitha ato zakone të kota, ligje fetare të pashkruara por të trashëguara nga turqit, dhuna, nënshtrimi i grave dhe fëmijëve, gjakmarrja dhe mbi të gjitha imoraliteti ishte i tmerrshëm antinjerëzorë, (dhe këtë ma ka treguar gjyshja ime që e ka jetuar atë kohë)Gjyshi im ka qenë dy herë ushtar në Jemen të Turqisë, njëherë për vete dhe njëher për vëllain më të vogël për arsye se atje shkonin dhe pak ktheheshin. Ai i dinte rrugën dhe e shpëtoj vëllain nga shumë vuajtje. Ka bërë 12 vjet ushtri për atë perandori të tmerrshme që i trajtonte ushtarët si skllevër. Në kohën e monizmit qeveria e Enver Hoxhës bëri një punë të mirë në zhdukjen e disa zakoneve të trashëguara nga turqit. Hoqi perçet grave dhe vajzave, u dha të drejtat e barabarta me burrat, i arsimoi gratë dhe bëri mbas luftës kurse kundër analfabetizmit me gratë e të gjitha moshave. Më kujtohet nëna ime që dinte të gjithë vjershën:Krujë o qytet i bekuar, prite prite Skënderbenë, po vjen si pëllumb i shkruar, të shpëtojë mëmëdhenë etj etj. Sot kanë ndryshuar kohët dhe Turqia duhet t'i kishte kërkuar falje shqiptarëve shumë kohë më parë për dëmet e shkaktuar por kohët e fundit na janë gjendur pranë si në tërmetin e fundit por këto nuk i justifikojnë kurrë ato 500 vite robëri. Ne sot do të ishim pjesë e Europës shumë më herët. Nuk besoj se otomanizmi do të përfundojë. Është i ngulitur keq.
