In this serious crisis of leadership, the American electorate is faced with a very important decision, which goes beyond the spectacle of debates and the frenzy of media reactions that follow...
Since the very poor performance of Joe Biden in the televised debate against his rival in the race Donald Trump, the Democratic Party has had many doubts about his candidacy. But all the talk about Biden's declining health has distracted the public from a critical examination of his administration's most egregious failures.
Now the Democrats are talking as if Biden's only problem is his obsession with convincing the public that he is still fit to serve in office. But the fish stinks, and thanks to his incompetent leadership, the Biden administration has weakened America's security, economic stability and international standing.
These shortcomings should not be overlooked. The left's failed policies have made America less safe and less prosperous. One of the most controversial issues of the Biden presidency has been the poor handling of the problem of illegal immigration crossings at the southern border of the USA.
Since taking office, the Biden administration has recorded about 7.2 million illegal border crossings, setting new records every year. Biden's agenda on open borders has significantly weakened the role of bodies that manage flows and has deepened the crisis.
The unprecedented increase in the number of immigrants has put a lot of pressure on local resources,
has overburdened border protection and management agencies, and brought serious humanitarian and security challenges. The focus of the discussion on Biden's cognitive abilities and his performance in the June 27 debate ignores this far more important failure, which has fundamental national and public security consequences.
The chaotic and sudden withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 stands out as one of Joe Biden's biggest foreign policy failures. That operation not only left more than $7 billion in US military equipment in the hands of the Taliban, but resulted in the deaths of 13 Americans.
This failure is widely regarded as one of the most humiliating foreign policy disasters in US history, severely damaging its credibility in the eyes of its allies. During an emergency session of the British parliament convened after the Taliban seized power, lawmakers from across the political spectrum, including Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer, slammed Biden and accused him of abandoning Afghanistan to its fate.
Johnson said he was upset that Britain was forced to withdraw its troops after Biden committed to a US withdrawal. Starmer called Biden's chaotic retreat a "misjudgment with disastrous consequences."
In other areas of foreign policy, the Biden administration has undermined the credibility of the US as a defender of democracy, fueled discontent in the developing world, emboldened aggressive countries like Iran and Russia, and empowered authoritarian rivals like China to gain influence, presenting itself as an alternative to US hegemony.
Biden's presidency may be remembered as one of the most corrupt in history. The Department of Justice targeted and damaged political opponents, primarily Donald Trump, in the run-up to the 2024 election. This behavior is akin to the government of a banana republic. Democrats will continue to deny this charge, insisting that "no one is above the law." But to the rest of the world, it's increasingly clear that the Biden administration has continued to retaliate against Trump and other political foes through investigations, indictments and other legal actions.
The debate, while deeply troubling, should not overshadow the larger context of Biden's presidency, and the dire impacts of his policies on our nation. From the crisis at the border to serious foreign policy blunders and the image of corruption at disturbing levels, these issues have far-reaching consequences for America's future.
Voters should not forget that at this point, Biden is nothing more than a post-holder. Whether or not he remains in the race, unless he is replaced by a Republican administration, the left's failed policies will continue to make America less safe and less prosperous.
In this serious crisis of leadership, the American electorate is faced with a very important decision, which goes beyond the spectacle of debates and the frenzy of media reactions that follow. The challenges presented by President Biden's administration are not only political issues, but fundamental issues that affect the state of the US and the entire globe.
Voters must demand not only the cognitive abilities normal to a high-level official, but also accountability, clarity and vision from those who seek to lead us, recognizing that our choices now will determine the nation's trajectory in the future.
But in the end, the issue is not just who stands (if they can) on the stage of the debate, but who stands on the side of the principles and policies that will ensure a safe, prosperous and just America. With his current record, Joe Biden fails in this aspect as well./Pamphlet adapted from "The Spectator"
