A highly wanted Albanian has been arrested in Croatia and then extradited on behalf of Italian authorities, as he is suspected of being part of a large criminal drug trafficking cartel.
There was an international arrest warrant against him, with a measure of "prison arrest" in absentia, for serious violations of drug law. The suspect pleaded not guilty before the preliminary investigation judge of the L'Aquila court, but the measure remained unchanged.
The arrest was made thanks to a complex investigative effort by the Italian State Police, in collaboration with the Croatian authorities and with the support of the SIRENE international cooperation channel.
However, the Albanian was extradited and was able to give his version of events during the preliminary hearing before the judge, who had signed his arrest warrant and those of other suspected accomplices arrested before him.
The suspect will remain in custody, pending further investigation, and his name was not made public.
The operation, which lasted more than two years, was carried out by the Flying Squad and the Investigative Section of the Central Operations Service (SISCO) of L'Aquila, under the coordination of the Antimafia District Directorate and the Attorney General's Office at the Court of Appeal of the Abruzzo capital.
At the center of the investigation was an organization made up of Albanians, Macedonians and Italians who had created a massive cocaine trafficking network, Italian media reports. The operation resulted in the arrest of 42 people, the execution of 38 precautionary measures - 29 in prison, 6 under house arrest and 3 with mandatory reporting.
Cars and motorcycles used for illegal activities, money and quantities of drugs were seized. However, five members of the criminal gang managed to escape the first operation, finding refuge in their respective countries of origin.
