A 70-year-old pedestrian lost his life this morning in the village of Hamallaj in Durrës, after being hit by a vehicle driven by a 57-year-old man. The elderly man's death is one of 116 others who have lost their lives in road accidents across the country during the first seven months of this year.
Official Traffic Police data show that the number of accidents is decreasing, but on the other hand the number of victims is increasing compared to 2024.
From January to July 2025, 767 accidents occurred. 146 fewer, compared to the same period a year earlier. As a result, 116 people died, 32 more than in the first 7 months of last year.
While the number of fatalities is higher in 2025, the figures show fewer people injured in accidents this year. From January to July 2025, 961 people were injured, 126 of whom were in serious condition.
In the same period of 2024, 1168 citizens were injured. During the two summer months, the figures show a significant increase in the number of accidents, also due to the increase in tourists, the flow of movements due to holidays. Speeding and the use of mobile phones at the wheel are among the main causes of accidents. But in 33% of cases it turned out that pedestrians who cut off the road for drivers or do not pass through white lines are also to blame.
Since May, the Traffic Police began implementing measures to prevent accidents, with several working groups on the ground to punish all disobedient drivers. Meanwhile, monitoring of the roads is being carried out through technological devices such as radars or drones.
