An Albanian who previously had British citizenship has now lost it after being accused of being the organizer of a vast migrant smuggling operation that operated across the English Channel.
The Albanian, whose real name is unknown, is known by the nickname C9. He entered the United Kingdom illegally in 1999, but managed to acquire British citizenship after some time.
C9 was charged in 2020 with money laundering, drug trafficking, possession of firearms and organization of a migrant smuggling ring.
Initially, he smuggled immigrants into the UK illegally, putting them in trucks.
With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, C9 allegedly changed its strategy, turning to small boats to transport migrants across the English Channel.
In 2020, the Home Secretary revoked C9's British passport, citing his status as an aid to the Albanian throughout his criminal activity.
The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) upheld this decision in January 2023.
The ruling sets a precedent, marking the first time someone has lost British citizenship over allegations of migrant smuggling.
According to media reports, despite the evidence against him, C9 maintains his innocence, insisting he is just a construction worker, despite owning a £200,000 Bentley.
His wife and children, all British citizens, now face an uncertain future.
His case underscores the increasing measures countries are willing to take to combat illegal immigration, even if it means stripping hard-won individuals of their citizenship.
