A case of sadistic punishment in the world of drugs is being heard at the Cologne District Court in Germany. German media reports that an Albanian man cut off the toes of a member of a cocaine gang after he lost a mobile phone containing sensitive customer data.
As punishment, in an apartment in the Kalk neighborhood, he had two of his toes cut off with pliers. For more than a week, the man was held hostage and tortured.
The drug gang did not believe the victim
The gang leader is suspected of having bought a total of about 200 kilograms of cocaine on several occasions, and together with his men, had divided the drugs in the apartment in Kalk for potential buyers. The victim had lost the phone through which the sales were organized. The phone had customer numbers stored on it, according to the indictment. Drug buyers continued to call that number. The fate of this “official phone” remains unclear to this day.
When the phone was discovered missing, the drug dealer was “called” by the gang, according to investigators. For about a week, he was kept locked up in the apartment in Kalk. According to the indictment, his associates wanted to force him to hand over the lost phone or admit that he had handed it over to the police. The gang boss in particular did not believe that he had really lost the phone.
Brutal torture
According to the indictment, the perpetrators suffocated the victim with a piece of cloth until she lost consciousness and broke a plate on her head. They also held a hot iron rod to her hip several times, causing burns. They also pressed lit cigarettes into her face. The 33-year-old defendant, who is currently on trial, also pointed a pistol at the victim and threatened: “I will kill you!”
Victim: "They cut off two of my toes"
According to the indictment, the perpetrators attempted to cut off two of the victim's toes with a pair of pliers. When the torturers had temporarily left, the person called for help and was released from the apartment. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and remained there for several days. While the indictment only speaks of an attempt, the victim stated in court that two of his toes were actually cut off – doctors at the hospital managed to sew them back together.
In the courtroom, the 33-year-old victim refused to give his current address. “He is still very scared,” his lawyer said. The man confirmed the incident but declined to give details. “I am very sorry, the memories are coming back,” he said. He admitted that he had previously been part of a drug gang and had already been convicted by the Court of First Instance.
The defense attorney recounted the incident.
Defense lawyer Philipp Thiée gave a lengthy statement on behalf of his client. Coming from Albania, the father of three had arrived in Germany to look for work and ended up in Cologne, where a cousin of his lived. The latter had involved him in drug activities. During the hostage-taking, he had been present and had injured the victim, but – according to the lawyer – had not used a weapon or pliers.
“He is not proud of what happened,” Thiée said. The accused had tried to pay the victim compensation for the pain, but the money, which he had in his hometown, was taken and spent by his father, an alcoholic. “For this reason, we cannot offer anything at the moment,” the lawyer explained. The decision is expected to be made no earlier than in a month.
