On September 8 of last year, the Albanian citizen Alket Hatija, who was arrested in Durrës on August 30, 2023, was to be extradited to Italy.
Since that day, Hatija has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by Italian justice in 2017.
For the authorities of this country, he is known as the "Drug Lord" and leader of a cocaine and heroin trafficking organization.
In 2017, a decision of the first instance of the Court of Durrës prevented his extradition to Italy on the grounds that he had served his sentence in Albania for the same charges.
Then in 2021, the Court of Appeal in Albania rejected this decision and authorized his extradition to Italy.
But from September 2021, Alket Hatija lost track, was declared wanted until he was arrested by the Albanian Police two years later.
Who is Alket Hatija?
Alket Hatija, also known as the "Drug Baron" or "Drug Lord", was arrested on August 30, 2023 in the premises of his hotel in the city of Durrës with the aim of extradition to Italy, after the Court of Appeal of Milan had sentenced him to 20 years in prison. The 50-year-old fought at all levels of the judiciary to avoid extradition.
According to the Italian authorities, only during the years 2003-2004, the so-called "Drug Lord" managed to traffic in Milan 350 kg of heroin and 190 kg of cocaine worth about 40 million euros.
For the first time he was arrested in 2008 at the request of the Italian authorities. The file was transferred to Albania where the Court of Serious Crimes sentenced Hatia to 10 years and 8 months in prison in 2010.
He regained his freedom on December 23, 2014 after completing his sentence in Albania, for the same criminal activity for which he was sentenced by the Italian courts to 20 years in prison.
Then Hatija was arrested in 2017, at the request of the Italian authorities with the purpose of extradition. A few months later, the Court of Durrës refused the extradition and removed the measure of "prison arrest", a decision that was also upheld by the Appeal.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court once again returned it to the First Instance, which this time together with Apel accepted the extradition. But, Alket Hatija did not give up, he fled and through his defenders sent the case to the Constitutional Court, which finally put an end to the judicial ordeal on January 31, 2022, leaving in effect his final extradition to Milan.
The arrest for the purpose of extradition was carried out on August 30 of this year. While on September 29, 2023 SPAK requested the confiscation of 8 assets of Alket Hatia. The assets that are requested to be confiscated by SPAK include an apartment, garages, vehicles as well as a hotel belonging to the Hatija family, which after investigations was returned by the decision of the Court of Appeal.
