Sefer Selimaj alias Ani Ibraliu was located and arrested as part of the "The Wanted" operation, in cooperation between Interpol Tirana and Interpol Rome.
After nine years on the run, a 42-year-old man convicted by Albanian justice for human trafficking has been arrested in Italy with the aim of extradition to Albania.
The State Police announced that as part of the international operation codenamed "The Wanted", citizen Sefer Selimaj alias Ani Ibraliu, 42 years old, who had been declared internationally wanted by the Albanian authorities, was arrested.
The arrest was made thanks to the cooperation and exchange of information between specialists from Interpol Tirana and Interpol Rome, who managed to locate the wanted person on Italian territory.
According to the police, the Tirana Court of Appeal sentenced Selimaj in 2017 to 15 years in prison for the criminal offense of "Human Trafficking", one of the most serious criminal offenses related to organized crime.
From the sentence given by the Albanian justice system, the 42-year-old still has 13 years, 10 months and 19 days of imprisonment left to serve.
Albanian and Italian authorities are continuing legal procedures for his extradition, with the aim of returning him to Albania to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Operation "The Wanted" is part of the ongoing cooperation between Albanian law enforcement agencies and international partners to locate and arrest internationally wanted persons who are attempting to evade justice by hiding abroad.
