Orjana Gremi, the girl who in January of last year threw her newborn baby into the waters of the Kir river, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.
In the court session held the day before in the Court of Shkodra, Gremi asked for mercy from the jury. However, her request was not taken into consideration by the Court of Shkodra. He is accused of "killing a minor".
The serious event that shocked public opinion happened on January 5, 2023, 5 days after the new mother had given birth to her baby.
She threw it into the waters of the Kir river, which turned out to be fatal for the baby, while immediately after the incident she was arrested in the village of Golem, where she lived with her relatives. There were 2 missionaries of the Catholic Church who notified the police after meeting the 32-year-old woman at her home but without the baby.
Initially, she gave conflicting statements to the nuns about the location of the child, and after they failed to find him, they alerted the blue uniforms.
The male baby was registered in the Shkodra hospital without a father, and the mother had also completed the procedures for the benefit of the birth bonus before committing the crime.
While earlier in the hospital he had asked to give him up for adoption, but then he changed his mind. As he left the hospital, Gremi went to the village of Golem, but on the way he threw the baby into the river.
