The court has sentenced former police officer Tomor Çela to 23 years in prison, accused of killing two people during the 1997 riots. The decision was announced after the end of the trial, where the jury found Çela guilty of the charges brought against him.

The serious incident dates back to November 27, 1997, when, according to the Police, on "Bajram Curri" street in Tirana, Tomor Çela shot and killed two citizens, Elton Dani and Ledian Hoxha. After the crime, he disappeared for years, escaping Albanian justice, until he was located in the United States of America.

The murder committed 25 years ago led to the 56-year-old from Durres being extradited from the US to Albania to serve his sentence. Former police officer Tomor Çela was extradited on June 2, 2022 and handed over to Albanian authorities.

Previously, the court had sentenced him in absentia to 23 years in prison for the criminal offenses of "Premeditated Murder" and "Unauthorized Possession and Production of Weapons, Explosive Weapons and Ammunition", a decision that was upheld upon his return to Albania.
