It is an act of extreme violence. The body was found near 'Westland Shopping', located not far from the city of Peterbos, a strategic location for drug trafficking in Brussels.
An unprecedented event has been recorded in Brussels, where a corpse was found hanging from a signboard.
The police went to the scene, accompanied by the Brussels Royal Prosecutor's Office.
"The body of a 29-year-old man was found in the Brussels Ring, near Anderlecht," the prosecution confirms, local media write.
According to information, the victim is of Albanian origin. The prosecution considers the death suspicious and has opened an investigation. The Federal Judicial Police Laboratory, a forensic doctor and an investigating judge have been engaged.
"The young man was hanging from the back of a signboard with a cable," the prosecution emphasizes, adding that "it is still too early to determine the exact circumstances of the incident."
The possibility of suicide is not ruled out at this stage.
However, it is an act of extreme violence. The body was found near the 'Westland Shopping', located not far from the city of Peterbos, a strategic location for drug trafficking in Brussels.
Even if a link between the Peterbos gang and the body found hanging has not been proven, this is another case of violence in a sensitive area of Brussels.
Last June, Nordine, a 49-year-old father, was shot to death in broad daylight in the parking lot of the Plum'Art store, not far from the shopping center.
Executions modeled after Mexican cartels
If the connection to drug trafficking is confirmed in the coming days, this Sunday's incident will move the capital into an unprecedented context.
"It resembles the methods of Mexican cartels," says an informed source.
These cartels are known for extreme violence and the use of brutal methods of repression against rivals, traitors or those who do not respect their rules. Several cases of public hangings have been recorded in Mexico in recent years, directly linked to these gangs, including the most notorious, the Sinaloa cartel, led by Joaquin Guzman, known as "El Chapo".
In 2017, six bodies were found hanging from bridges in the tourist region of Baja California del Sur. Experts linked this to the bloody war between the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel for control of drug trafficking. A context reminiscent of the events in Brussels more than a year ago.
In an interview with 'Het Laatste Nieuës' last August, Eric Jacobs, director of the Federal Judicial Police of Brussels, observed the presence in the capital of the Marseille mafia, the famous "Mocro-Mafia", of Albanian networks and gangs originating from North Africa.
“They all use the same methods: threat, intent, murder,” said Eric Jacobs. Was Sunday’s victim part of this mafia world? Was he used as a warning to rivals? The police investigation should reveal that. However, this case is not inconsistent with the methods used by traffickers in Brussels.
“What we see is just the tip of the iceberg,” the director of the federal judicial police said in August. “There is much more going on in the underworld: threats, intimidation… and yes, torture. We do not have active cases of torture, but we have discovered such cases after decoding secret communications. These are mafia techniques.”
Two disturbing events
In March 2022, Yacine, who used his apartment in Marolles as a warehouse for drug trafficking, was found mutilated on Rue Des Visitandines. The autopsy showed signs of extremely severe torture: burns to the genitals, chest, abdomen and triceps with a clamp; anal penetrations with objects; a swollen face. The reason for the torture: Yacine allegedly stole a quantity of cocaine stored in one of the apartment's safes. In short, it was a punishment for disobedience.
Another disturbing case: last April, the trial of the Clemenceau gang, active in cannabis and cocaine trafficking, highlighted the punitive techniques of traffickers. Investigators found videos on the defendants' phones showing a "grater" (an undocumented person used to distribute drugs on the street) being beaten: wrapped in cellophane, he is hit in the head with the butt of a revolver.
Whether or not it is related to a turf war between drug traffickers, last Sunday's incident is yet another example of the escalation of violence that Brussels has been experiencing for more than a year. Since the beginning of the year, the capital has been the scene of at least 57 shootings, according to the latest statistics in August.
