
A 48-year-old Greek citizen has been detained by the Greek police in a place called Koropi in Athens, after he was found to be counterfeiting olive oil of different labels.
The police say that the author imported from Bulgaria and Moldova large quantities of vegetable oil, mainly sunflower or peanut, and after processing it with chemicals and flavorings, he turned it into virgin and extra virgin olive oil, which he sold in markets and a a large amount was exported under different labels to Albania and Bulgaria.
In the quality of material evidence, the amount of 14 tons of vegetable oil, the amount of 6 tons of processed and counterfeit oil with a ready-made label and seemingly olive, two vehicles, amounts of chemicals and different flavorings were found.
Samples of the seized items were sent for analysis, while the 48-year-old was taken to the court, which decided to keep him in prison until the end of the investigation. The charges against the author are label forgery, product forgery and putting the consumer's life at risk with toxic and dangerous substances and materials.
The police also have in hand an agenda of his, in which the points of sale inside and outside Greece as well as the points of his supply are documented.
Recently, an increased attempt to falsify olive oil has been noticed, since the small amount produced this year has caused the price of olive oil in Greece to exceed 10 euros per liter.
