The Serious Crimes Court trial against Franc Çopja was suspended due to bed lice!
The Serious Crimes Court trial against Albanian drug trafficker Franc Gergely (33) in Brussels has been suspended. Not because a lawyer requested the judge's disqualification or because of any procedural error, but because of the presence of bed bugs in the courtroom.
The trial concerns the brutal murder of Ardit Spahiu, committed in broad daylight, on the street, in Brussels on November 27, 2021. According to the federal prosecutor's office, the murder was a settling of scores between two mafia clans, and seven people are being tried in the 'Justitia' building. These are the former NATO buildings in Evere.
Today, one of the jurors noticed a bed bug on his arm. When the hearing resumed after the lunch break, the presiding judge decided to suspend the trial for 24 hours, “so that measures can be taken.”
"This goes too far. I don't want to put jurors, lawyers, defendants or anyone else at risk ," said Judge Isabelle de Saedeleer, referring to the many problems the justice system constantly faces.
The court recommended that all those involved wash their clothes at 60 degrees or put them in the refrigerator. It is not clear what measures the justice system will now be able to take. The 'war' against bed lice is a process that requires a lot of work.
Moving the trial to another room is also impossible. The jury room in the Palace of Justice in Brussels, on Poelaert Square, is not available, as is the ceremonial room of the Court of Appeal in Brussels.
The jury room in the courthouse in Nivelles has been closed for a year because the building is in poor condition. The 'Justitia' building in Evere is used for many other trials.
