Murder of Greek mafia boss George Moschouris, two Albanians among those arrested

A wide-ranging operation by Greek authorities has led to the arrest of four people suspected of being part of the criminal organization that organized the mafia execution of George Moschouris, one of the most well-known names of the so-called "Greek Mafia", known in the criminal world by the nickname "Thaçnakia".

Among those arrested are two citizens of Albanian origin, who, according to Greek investigators, had a key role in the logistical organization of the assassination attempt that occurred on April 24, 2025 outside a private clinic in the Halandri area of Athens.

The other two arrested are Greek citizens, one of whom is already in prison for another criminal case. According to Greek media, the group is not only accused of the murder of Moschouris, but also of a series of other serious criminal acts, related to explosives, illegal wiretapping, stalking and weapons possession.

Investigations by the Directorate for the Fight against Organized Crime in Greece have revealed that the group had taken over the entire organization of the mafia assassination: securing weapons, vehicles, moving the executioners and their departure from Greece immediately after the crime.

According to authorities, the perpetrators were Russophiles and had entered Greece only to carry out the assassination, only to leave the same day. It is suspected that the assassination was ordered by "Edik", considered the leader of the Russian-speaking mafia and one of the most powerful figures in cigarette smuggling in the region, who is believed to operate from Dubai.

The investigative file also mentions the name of Giannis Lala, a well-known figure in the Greek underworld, later killed in Arahova. According to investigators, Lala had previously collaborated with Moschouris, but then switched sides to the “Edik” group, with whom he is suspected of organizing the elimination of his former ally.

Greek authorities believe the main motive for the clash was to control cigarette smuggling, a multi-million dollar market dominated for years by the Russian-speaking mafia. According to investigators, Moschouris had recently entered this activity, challenging the interests of the criminal group.

Greek police say the manner of the assassination immediately betrayed the origin of the perpetrators. The attack was considered typical of the Russian-speaking mafia and Ukrainian groups: brutal, cold-blooded and without any concern for potential collateral victims.

Investigators link this assassination to a series of previous executions in the Greek underworld, including the murders of Zambounis, Roubetis, Mouzakitis and Skaftouros, all attributed to the same criminal organization.

In wiretaps secured by the Greek police, members of the "Edik" organization openly expressed the need for "Thaçnakia" to be eliminated, along with the last historical figure of the "Greek Mafia" who is still in prison.

Another shocking detail of the investigation concerns the surveillance of the lawyer of one of the main figures of the Greek mafia. According to the police, members of the group had placed GPS in her vehicle and cameras near her apartment, planning an assassination during any possible release of her client from prison.

The file also includes an explosion with explosives at a car company in Nea Erythraia in August 2024. The owner of the company had cooperation with Moschouris and from there the victim had also taken the armored vehicle that was outside the clinic on the day of the attack.

According to the police, the group had been operating since at least July 2024 as a structured criminal organization, with continuous activity in assassinations, explosions, and surveillance of targets.

From the searches in apartments and premises used as shelters for the organization, the Greek police seized over 13 thousand euros in cash, mobile phones, more than 500 grams of cannabis, GPS, surveillance cameras, frequency copying equipment, internet routers, cartridges, knives and anabolic substances.

According to the investigation, one of the arrested Albanians had the role of transporting the executioners to the point where the vehicles used in the assassination were parked. Another arrested person had an operational role and coordinated the movements of the assassins during the preparation, execution and escape.

Meanwhile, the two perpetrators who shot Moschouris with a Kalashnikov remain at large.

The assassination took place on April 24, 2025, on one of the main streets of Halandri. Two people dressed in black ambushed the 55-year-old as he left a private clinic and was walking towards his vehicle. The victim was shot from behind with a Kalashnikov rifle and left dead on the sidewalk.

A few minutes later, police found the vehicle used by the assailants burned in the Patima area of Halandri. The vehicle turned out to be stolen and the owner had not yet managed to declare the robbery.

Greek media reports that authorities had thwarted several previous attempts to eliminate Moschouris, one of which even included executing him near a swimming pool where his child frequented. After several plans failed, the victim is believed to have let his guard down.

Investigations continue to fully identify the criminal network, while the main track remains the bloody war between the traditional Greek mafia and Russian-speaking organizations that seek absolute control over cigarette smuggling and criminal activities in Greece. / Pamphlet
