Tuesday, October 6th was not a normal day for Albanian justice, order and security, as it would be the last day of life for Judge Astrit Kalaja. He was shot dead inside the courthouse.
After the announcement of a court decision that was not in favor of the Shkembi family, tensions escalated immediately. Gjon Shkembi, one of the parties in the process, addressed the judge with the words: “I am confirming what the whole of Shkodra has said about you, that you are…”, implying a strong verbal clash. Judge Kalaja calmly replied: “You go on, go on”, but at that moment, Elvis Shkembi pulled out his gun from his belt and shot him in the head.
According to the testimony given to the prosecution, the incident occurred in front of many people, including Ervis Kurtaj and his father Ragip, who were injured during the shooting. Ervis stated that in an attempt to avoid the situation, he had tried to pull his father towards the corridor, but the perpetrator had continued to shoot at them as well.
Gjon Shkembi also gave a brief testimony, claiming that he was a victim and that he had no knowledge of what was about to happen. The serious incident has left deep consequences on public opinion and has raised numerous questions about security in court premises.
Author Elvis Shkembi's testimony to investigators: " I was shocked at that moment. Judge Kalaja's decision seemed very unfair to me. When I heard how he closed the process, I felt a great hatred inside me. At that moment, without thinking twice, I took out the gun that I had been carrying for years for self-defense and shot him in the direction of him. I had no intention of killing him, I simply could not bear the injustice that was being done to us. Immediately after the shooting, I went out into the yard with my uncle and gave him the car keys, telling him to leave because it had nothing to do with this matter."
“I was shocked, confused, I didn’t know what I was doing. When I saw the police approaching, I stood up and said to them: ‘I shot the gun.’ I remember my uncle only saying to me: ‘Shoot us off!’, and he himself didn’t do anything, he just stood there numb. I had the gun on my belt in other hearings, but I never used it. It was the first time I shot with it. I keep it for self-defense, not to pressure the court. I’m sorry for everything that happened. I didn’t want it to end like this. It was a severe psychological moment that overwhelmed me and blinded me .” / MCN
