Greek media have published images of the birthday party with drinks, cell phones and cake, which took place in the prisons of Ioannina, where a criminal organization whose members were involved in drug importation was dismantled.
In fact, the party does not seem to take place in secret, not even in a cell.
To dismantle the organization, a coordinated police operation was carried out in Ioannina, Igoumenitsa and Corfu, with the assistance of EKAM and YAT teams, the Directorate of Security of Thessaloniki, the Deputy Directorate of Security of Corfu, as well as police dogs.
During the operation, 8 members of the organization were arrested, among them 3 prison officers.
Those arrested are charged with criminal gang, drug, money laundering, weapons, bribery, breach of official confidentiality, breach of duty and breach of immigration laws and importation of cell phones into correctional institutions.
How did they work?
According to a police report, the organization's modus operandi was as follows: The head of the organization was an Albanian, a prisoner, who coordinated drug trading and trafficking from within the cell and was the final recipient of the proceeds.
Another person had taken over drug trafficking in Corfu, while a part of the income went to the leader of the organization.
The police officer and an arrested woman were middlemen of the transactions, receiving the sums which they handed over to the head of the organization, either in direct meetings with him inside the prison, or by depositing them in his individual account through the accountant.
From the investigations so far, 7 cases of drug trafficking, 39 cases of money laundering and 3 violations of official confidentiality have been identified.
At the same time, for the police officer, a member of the organization, the investigation resulted in other cases of violation of official confidentiality, bribery and drug trafficking.
620,782 euros, 18 cell phones, small amounts of cannabis, shredders, 8 knives, a stick, 2 Tazer devices, 2 grenades, 2 magazines, 302 cartridges, a valuable watch and documents were found and seized.
The confiscated items will be sent for laboratory examination, while the amounts will be sent to the Deposit and Loan Fund. The arrested have been sent to the competent Prosecutor's Office./ Vizion Plus
