Italian police have dismantled two linked criminal groups, mostly Albanians. During an operation carried out by the Carabinieri of Rimini and other Italian cities, 61 people were arrested for stealing luxury goods and dealing in drugs.
Italian police have arrested 61 people and seized 8 million euros of cocaine and hashish, which was obtained from the sale of stolen materials and money.
Among the suspects is a carabinieri who is accused of collaborating with the organization. The group is also suspected of the robbery at the home of pensioner Pierina Paganelli, who was killed during the attack.
The investigation coordinated by the Romagna Prosecutor's Office, under the direction of Prime Minister Davide Ercolani, led to the arrest of 61 people. 39 precautionary measures were executed this morning.
Last year, in addition to the house robberies, the criminal group is suspected of being responsible for a violent robbery of a person, from whom they forcibly stole a 'Rolex' worth 45 thousand euros. Investigations revealed that the elderly man's house was shown to the robbers by the detained carabinieri herself.
The group is also believed to be involved in the robbery that resulted in the death of Pierina Paganelli's home, although the investigation is still ongoing. In that case, the thieves removed the seals and broke into a safe, which was later found empty in a field. However, there is no connection between the gang and the murder of the 78-year-old.
The two criminal groups operated in a coordinated manner. The home burglaries followed a well-planned pattern, with the gang targeting jewelry, safes, designer clothes and valuable watches. The proceeds from the robberies were then reinvested in drug trafficking, mainly cocaine and hashish imported from abroad.
The total value of the seized drugs is estimated at over eight million euros, but with its cutting and distribution it would bring in profits of around 25 million euros. Among the suspected gang associates is a shop owner in Rimini, currently under investigation, who is said to have modified the interiors of several vehicles to create hiding places suitable for drug transport.
The investigation began in March 2024, following a series of robberies along the Riviera Romagnola. On January 19, four members of the gang were arrested between Rimini and Riccione. In a short time, the group had amassed a large amount of luxury goods, including 40 designer watches worth a total of 800,000 euros, exclusive clothing and 20,000 euros in cash, the proceeds of which were secured from drug trafficking activities.
During the checks, firearms were also found, including rifles loaded with ammunition, which had been stolen between Romagna and Lombardy.
