A large-scale drug-trafficking criminal organization has been busted by Belgium's federal police.
It is learned that the organization was run by people of Albanian origin, who recruited truck drivers from Greece to transport drugs from Belgium to the United Kingdom.
Several suspects were arrested yesterday, during the search of about 30 apartments.
During this operation, investigators seized two pistols, cash, luxury items and several vehicles.
"These seizures contribute to the dismantling of the network by revealing the financial and logistical resources that the suspects allegedly used in their illegal activities," the prosecutor's office said.
Prior to this operation, investigators had already focused on suspicious shipments, which led to the seizure of cocaine and sums of money by French and English authorities. These seizures also strengthened the investigation and revealed the extent of the suspected international drug trafficking network.
"The investigation revealed that the network allegedly used shipping companies to hide drug shipments by hiding loads in trucks carrying legal goods. Thanks to this modus operandi, drugs would have been discreetly smuggled across the Channel to supply the English market,” the public prosecutor said.
