A 27-year-old man from Tirana was arrested by police on Monday and his girlfriend was taken into custody after they demanded a thousand euros from a person in order to delete some photos and posts from his private life from the social network Tik-Tok. Their blackmail had started a year ago. From the data that a2cnn has provided, it turns out that during 2024, criminal offenses from cyber attacks increased by 58% compared to 2023.
Last year, a total of 1,210 criminal offenses were recorded in the field of cybercrime, 446 more than the previous year.
Expert Fatjon Softa says that mainly young people involved in this criminal offense use blackmail in the form of extortion.
"The first are for extortion, some are for revenge, some are for denigration for various reasons, and this comes from the fact that the greater involvement of young people in social networks, in addition to the positive sides, has also turned it into using the negative sides. Here, people should be careful and from time to time have to be very strict about the way they provide private photos ," expert Fatjon Softa emphasizes for A2 CNN.
According to him, the danger does not only come from the social network Tik-Tok, as it has been stigmatized in public so far, but there are also other legal platforms that are widely used by criminal groups.
"We all focused on Tik-Tok, but the most dangerous is Telegram. It is a platform that is being widely used for these blackmails. It is being used by criminal groups, it is being used by groups that deal with the phenomenon of prostitution, drugs, arms trafficking, but also as a tool where at least our enemies, or unfriendly states, have used it to distribute sensitive data, such as the groups that distributed all our data through Telegram," the expert told A2 CNN.
Softa says that a good portion of the people who take part in these criminal acts are not identified because they buy their SIM cards on the black market.
"Albanian SIMs that are sold on the market are still not stopping this phenomenon. At the post office, anyone who wants to go and buy an anonymous number with 20 or 30 thousand old lek is given a number and this number starts as a starting point to register through an anonymous number on these platforms which they then use with fake profiles and blackmail," expert Softa tells A2 CNN.
Last year, out of 1,031 perpetrators identified for cyberattacks, 244 people were arrested, others were prosecuted at large and declared wanted./ A2CNN
