A 44-year-old man from Albania was arrested yesterday in Italy after he was caught with 7 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a backpack during a routine police check.
Officers in San Trovaso, in the Treviso area, stopped the vehicle for routine checks, but the driver's tense demeanor and unclear answers raised suspicions. After checking the vehicle, police discovered a backpack placed between the seats, containing 14 packets of cocaine, each weighing about half a kilogram.
“Stopped for a routine traffic check, the forty-four-year-old displayed excessive and unjustified nervousness, giving contradictory answers that prompted the officers to further inspect the vehicle. The surprise came when the officers glanced into the space between the back seat and the front passenger seat. There was a seemingly harmless backpack, but when it was opened, it revealed the “hot” cargo: fourteen blocks of white powder, ready to be thrown on the market,” Italian media reports .
Preliminary tests confirmed that the narcotic substance was of high quality and was intended for distribution on the local market, mainly during the weekend. According to authorities, after being divided into doses, this quantity would generate income amounting to hundreds of thousands of euros.
The police also seized the arrested person's phone and are continuing investigations to identify the supply and distribution network.
