A 44-year-old Albanian man has been identified by Italian authorities as the perpetrator of the theft at the Basilica of San Luca in Bologna, after an investigation that lasted about a month and a half.
According to police, he is being investigated for both the robbery at the basilica and the theft of the vehicle he used to commit the robbery. The 44-year-old has a criminal record.
The incident dates back to February 17, when it is suspected that he first stole a car and then, at night, entered the basilica using a nearby construction site. In this way, he managed to penetrate the interior without being noticed.
Inside the religious facility, he stole jewelry donated to the icon of the Virgin Mary, as well as other donations from believers.
One of the key pieces of evidence for investigators was a glove left at the scene, which helped identify the perpetrator.
After the theft, he fled in the stolen vehicle, which he abandoned a few kilometers away. The vehicle was found carefully cleaned, indicating the perpetrator's attempt to cover his tracks.
His identification was made possible after analyzing a large number of security camera footage, through which the police reconstructed his movements in detail.
Just one day after the incident, the 44-year-old was located in Slovenia, where he was suspected of attempting to leave for Albania.
One element that has caught the attention of investigators is the fact that the alarm system in the basilica was deactivated due to the works, a circumstance that may have facilitated the theft. The Italian prosecutor's office has completed the preliminary investigations and has initiated legal proceedings against him for both criminal offenses.
