An elderly woman has ended up in hospital as a result of asphyxiation caused by a fire that engulfed her apartment on the first floor of a building in Gjirokastra.

The incident occurred at around 17:49, where the fire brigade was notified by the police about the fire in an apartment on the first floor of a building in the "18 Shtatori" neighborhood.

According to an official announcement, fire crews determined that the elderly woman Cevi Jonuzi, 83 years old, was in the apartment, unable to get out and was suffocating inside the burning apartment.

Firefighters intervened quickly, enabling the elderly woman to be removed from the apartment and escorted to the emergency room for first aid. Firefighters brought the flames under control, preventing them from spreading to other apartments in the building.
