Artificial intelligence reproduces the voice of John Lennon, the last album of

Artificial intelligence was used to model John Lennon's voice based on an old recording to create "the definitive Beatles album" decades after the band broke up, Paul McCartney announced on Tuesday.

McCartney, 80, told BBC radio that artificial intelligence was used to separate voices from other sounds in recordings during the production of director Peter Jackson's 2021 documentary series, titled The Beatles: The Return. The "new" song is expected to be released later this year, Mr McCartney said.

Mr Jackson "managed to isolate John's voice through some tapes and a piano", Mr McCartney told BBC radio. “He was able to separate them through artificial intelligence; telling the machine that 'this is a voice, this is a guitar, take the guitar away'."

"So when we produced what would be the last Beatles album, it was from a test that John was working on," he added. "We were able to take John's voice and clean it up through artificial intelligence, so that we could use it further to create the album. It gives you a kind of freedom of action."

McCartney did not identify by name the test recording that was used, but the BBC and others said it was likely from an unfinished 1978 love song by Lennon titled "Now and Then". The musical sample was included on a tape titled 'For Paul', which was given to McCartney by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, BBC radio reported.

McCartney described AI technology as "kind of scary, but interesting," adding, "We'll see where it takes us."

The same technology enabled McCartney to perform a virtual "duet" with Lennon, who was killed in 1980, on "I've Got a Feeling" at last year's Galstonbury Festival.

Singer-songwriter McCartney is expected to open an exhibition later this month at the National Portrait Gallery in London featuring photographs taken by him during the Beatles' early days at the start of the so-called "Beatlemania". ”, when the many followers raised this musical band to the level of world fame.

The exhibition, called "Eyes of the Storm", will have over 250 photographs that McCartney took with his camera in the period 1963-1964, including portraits of the band members: Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon, as well as the manager of the Beatles group, Brian Epstein./ VOA
