
One of the most popular Iranian directors, Dariush Mehrjui and his wife have been found stabbed to death in their apartment, local media reports.
The 83-year-old director has been associated with the new wave of cinema in Iran, first creating the film "Cow" in 1969.
"Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were killed after several stab wounds to the neck," said Hossein Fazeli-Harikandi, the head of the judiciary for the Tehran region, according to local media.
In an interview published on Sunday by the newspaper 'Etemad', the director's wife previously said that she was threatened several times and their house was stolen.
In the period 1980-1985, the director lived in France and worked on several documentary films.
In the 90s, Mehrjui also portrayed the lives of women in the films "Sara", "Pari" and "Leila", melodramas about infertile women, which encouraged men to marry second wives.
