The film world is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the nominations for the Bafta awards, which will be made public in London ahead of the ceremony on February 22. This is the last major institution to publish the lists of this season, following the Oscar nominations last week.
The films expected to top the lists are "Hamnet," "Sinners," and "One Battle After Another," while other candidates like "Marty Supreme," "Bugonia," and "Frankenstein" are also considered strong contenders.
One of the surprises this year is the absence of the highly anticipated production "KPop Demon Hunters", which will not be part of the competition due to Bafta rules, as it was initially released only on Netflix without prior screenings in cinemas in the UK.
Unlike the Oscars, Bafta offers more space for local talent, thanks to special categories for Best British Film and Best Debut, giving additional chances for actors and directors from Britain and Ireland to gain attention on the domestic scene.
Industry experts point out that Bafta results often provide strong signals about future Oscar winners, especially in the acting categories. However, surprises are not out of the question, as last year the winner of best picture at Bafta was different from that of the American Academy.
This year's ceremony will be presented by Alan Cumming and is expected to mark one of the highlights of the awards season for international cinema.
