Dutch artist Joost Klein has been disqualified from the Eurovision 2024 competition after an incident backstage. He was sent home after a complaint was made to the Swedish police by a female member of the Festival's Swedish production team.

In a statement, Eurovision organizers said it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the competition until the legal process takes place.

Klein was among the favorites to win with his song, Europapa, dedicated to his father, who died of cancer when the singer was 12.

News of his suspension broke on Friday afternoon during the first dress rehearsal for Saturday's grand final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes the event, later released a statement saying they were "investigating a reported incident involving the Dutch artist".

On Saturday, Swedish police confirmed they had filed a complaint against him for "illegal threats" at Malmo Arena after Thursday's semi-final.

The EBU then confirmed that Klein would not be taking part in Saturday's grand final.

"We maintain a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior at our event and are committed to providing a safe working environment for all staff. In light of this, Joost Klein's behavior towards a team member is considered in breach of the rules of the Competition", they said.

Organizers also noted that "contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any performers or other members of the delegation."

It was initially suggested that Klein had fallen out with the Israeli delegation.
