A civil status document reveals that the surname "Alia" was the grandfather's name, while his family's origins are linked to the Dukagjin Plain...
An archival document circulating online sheds light on Ramiz Ali's family origins. His surname was not inherited, but chosen by his father, who was named Taip Kafexhija from Istog, Kosovo. The family history explains the movements from Kosovo to Shkodra and Tirana and the roots of his connection to the communist elite.
A civil status document, which is being circulated by several scholars, reveals an interesting fact about the family origins of Ramiz Alia, the last communist leader and the first President of the post-communist period. According to this document, the surname “Alia” is not a family heirloom, but the name of his paternal grandfather. Ramiz’s father, Taipi, formalized this surname when he settled in Shkodra in the early 20th century, leaving behind the original surname “Kafexhija”.

According to archival records, the Kafexhija family originated from the Dukagjin Plain, in the Istog area, the same province from which Ibrahim Rugova came. The family moved from Kosovo to Shkodra, where they rented the Oso Kukës tower, now a historical museum. They then settled in Tirana, where Ramiz, the youngest of Taipi's five children, began a career that would take him to the heights of power.
As Minister of Education and Culture, Ramiz Alia was involved in the period of mass education and the eradication of illiteracy. During his term, the University of Tirana and the “New Albania” Film Studio were opened, which he himself considered the greatest achievement of his career.
In private life, Alia took special care to maintain a pure family image. Little was known about his brothers and sisters, but the family connection with Enver Hoxha through the marriage of his niece Teuta to Hoxha’s son, Ilir, became a decisive factor in his rise after the dictator’s death.
After 1991, with the collapse of the system, Ramiz Alia was accused by his opponents of being of Serbo-Montenegrin origin, but people who knew him claimed that his roots were from Kosovo. He himself has never spoken publicly about this, keeping his family history silent, between legend and the memory of an era that ended with him./ Pamphlet
